We recently invited the incredibly talented musician and creative powerhouse,
Daniela Andrade, into our studio for a bit of girl talk and treats. And, if you don't know all there is to know about Daniela yet, all you really need to do is listen to one of her dreamy covers to understand why over 600,000 people have subscribed to her channel. Get to know Daniela a bit more personally as we talk favourite places to eat in Edmonton, the significance of her tattoo, and how she plans to #WearTheChange.
For those who don't know you, Daniela, what do you do for a living?I'm a musician and singer-songwriter How old are you?23 What's your Instagram handle?@danielaandrade Tell us a random fact about yourself!I collect pins. Now that you've moved to Toronto, what do you miss the most about Edmonton? The quiet. Not a peep in the night time. It’s almost eerie but its mostly really peaceful. Favourite place to eat in Edmonton? Co Do Hue! Pho is my favourite and Edmonton has the best pho.
Who inspires you?
People that are living out their dreams! They make me believe in asking questions and finding answers. Nothing is impossible and success is defined by you. If I had to peg my inspiration on some one at this current time though I’d have to say Haruki Murakami. I recently finished reading “What I Mean When I Talk About Running” and it kind of changed me a little, in the best way. He’s a great writer.
Tell us about your tattoo. We love it!
My tattoo means a lot of things to me! But the general definition of it is that I’m a dreamer. An optimist. Or I’d like to think I am (I could probably be better at being optimistic). In grade 2 my teacher always gave me a hard time cause I’d day dream during class. Just stare into the ether. That was about the same time I started to love reading books and my imagination was starting to grow some legs. My heads always somewhere else. An astronaut helmet seemed appropriate.
What's your favourite part about making music?
My favourite part about making music is when it comes out without much thought! There's been some special moments where I write a song in under an hour and I hear it all in my brain and somehow succeed to bring it out into reality. There isn't anything quite like it, it feels pretty magical and it's what got me hooked. The first time that happened I was 16. From then on, I knew I wanted to make music for the rest of my life.
Why is the slow fashion movement important to you?Slow fashion is about conscious living. It can be an easily overlooked part of everyday life, I’m guilty of not giving it much thought too! Consumerism is deeply engrained in us and its encouraged everywhere. As I’ve gotten older though, I’ve been trying to implement more control over my decisions. Just like the food I eat, the clothes I wear doesn’t appear out of nowhere; every article has an impact and a footprint on our environment. When I began to learn how connected we are to our environment through documentaries and articles of things going on around the world, I couldn’t unlearn these things. You can’t ignore a problem hoping it goes away, you gotta do something about it!
How do you plan to #WearTheChange?I plan to wear the change by continuing to rebuild my relationship with clothing; choosing clothes with awareness, supporting local shops and learning to not get bought into mass consumption that benefits no one. Love the skin you’re in and what rubs against it! It really feels good to make smart choices in fashion.
